Nation Chapter 7

So we are moving into the Ferris and Hedgcock book as we begin to talk about writing, but I wanted to encourage you to take a look at chapter 7 of the Nation book if you are looking for some different kinds of writing activities. We will discuss some of them in class, but Nation provides many different kinds of writing tasks that work in different ways and meet different needs. So take a look if you have a chance - see anything new and interesting that you want to try?

  1. Two suggestions in this chapter leaped off the page at me.
    • P. 96 – having students discuss and clarify with other speakers in their own native language the assignment and then produce the result individually in English. Couple of observations … class obviously needs to have at least 2 students with a common L1. Have used this in accounting class with marvelous success on in-class (non-graded) assignments.
    • P. 98 – ten perfect sentences -- liked this idea because it provides students with parameters and establishes the habit early of focusing on what you will say before you put it down on paper in formal presentation, a great foundation for pre-paper planning, such as outlines.
I felt this chapter was actually better than some of the reading chapters. I especially appreciated the beginning of this chapter which succinctly tied the author’s underlying principles to the task of writing.
