Immigrant Successes
Interesting article about a special school in New York preparing recent immigrant students for college. Looks as though they could use a some service learning volunteers!

ReplyDeleteWhat a terrific article .. inspired some digging (how DID we live before Google??). The link above is to the Newcomer School web site. It contains a lot more info, mission statement, staff, etc. on and about the scool.
I am now curious to find out more about this school, what went into its chartering w/in the NY Public School System, and whether there are any others like it out there. I would also like to know how others in the class feel about such schools being a great asset to our current public school systems, which have many dilemmas to deal with, and are typically very ill-equipped to deal with non-English L1 students. I can see that having one school were all of the non-English L1's go could provide a target for certain groups in this troubled political climate, but I really liked the student's comment that no one was afraid to speak English there because no one else spoke it ... so no loss of face. Very, very interesting
